notaclient3-198x300Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge eating disorder have strong comorbid conditions with OCD, Anxiety and Depression. Majority of the eating disorder treatment facilities do not utilize Neurofeedback as a treatment modality. At Healthy Within Brain Institute, our positive experience with Neurofeedback was so strong that we decided to stop our Intensive Outpatient program so that our patients could benefit from Neurotherapy. For majority of eating disorders there is an underlying anxiety or depression therefore Neurofeedback directly targets the Depression and Anxiety without medications. Binge Eating Disorder responds very well to Neurofeedback since there is loss of impulse control with the BED. Any impulse control issues such as Binge eating or purging respond extremely well to Neurofeedback. Eating disorders and other addictions are ways in which people cope with stress and trauma in their lives. Neurofeedback is a way the brain is taught to calm itself and grow new brain pathways to respond to stress in a much more healthier way.

Our experience is that when we teach our patients about their brain, and they understand why their brain does what it does, plus how to train it so that it can cope better, it gives them some very hopeful, concrete ways to understand their feelings and also cope differently with the stress in their lives. Additionally, early recovery with eating disorders can tend to bring cravings, mental fogginess, insomnia, lack of concentration and anxiety about weight. Neurofeedback helps patients focus and get more connected with the process of recovery. Relapse behaviors tend to be significantly less when Neurofeedback is one of the treatment modalities. Body awareness also tends to increase with Neurofeedback and there is a much more loving connection that starts with the body.

Neurofeedback is not a stand alone treatment as we incorporate Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Family Therapy and Nutrition Counseling with it.
