The Basics

What Is Direct Neurofeedback? A Gentle Form of Neuromodulation

Direct Neurofeedback is a noninvasive technology that uses extremely low-power signals delivered through small sensors placed on the head. The signals are designed to gently disrupt patterns of brain activity that may have become stuck, giving the brain an opportunity to reorganize and develop healthier patterns.

Think of it like rebooting a computer that has frozen. The goal is not to force your brain to change, but to provide the input that may help it get out of patterns that are no longer serving you.

How It Works

How Does Direct Neurofeedback Work?

During a session, small sensors are placed on specific areas of the head. The system monitors your brain activity and provides subtle signals back through the sensors.

Gentle, Low-Power Signals

The signals are extremely low power and are not something you feel.

Nothing to Concentrate On

You do not need to concentrate, answer questions, or actively control your brainwaves. Once you are connected, you can simply sit back and relax.

Works With Your Nervous System

Direct Neurofeedback works with the autonomic nervous system, which plays an important role in how your body responds to stress, rest, and recovery.

The goal is to help the nervous system move away from a persistent “fight or flight” state and toward a calmer, more regulated state.

Two Approaches

Direct Neurofeedback vs. Traditional Neurofeedback

Traditional Neurofeedback

Active brain training

Traditional neurofeedback generally involves actively training the brain through repeated feedback, helping you learn to change specific patterns of brain activity.
Direct Neurofeedback

The brain reorganizes on its own

Rather than requiring you to consciously change your brain activity, Direct Neurofeedback provides subtle signals intended to disrupt dysfunctional patterns and allow the brain to reorganize on its own.
Because it works with the nervous system as a whole, Direct Neurofeedback is not designed around treating only one specific diagnosis. It may be used to support a variety of symptoms and concerns.

Not sure which approach is right for you? You and Dr. Kakaiya can discuss your symptoms, goals, and overall treatment plan to determine whether traditional neurofeedback, Direct Neurofeedback, or another approach is the best fit for your individual needs.
